Job Overview:

The purpose of this role is to provide engineering consultancy and independent assurance on projects predominantly in permanent way area.
This should be read in conjunction with the appropriate role profile for Consultant, Senior Consultant or Principal Consultant.
We work on a range of infrastructure systems including track and switches and crossings and wheel/rail interface issues and covering design, maintenance and operations.
Our clients include infrastructure designers, manufacturers, maintainers and owners.
The types of consultancy we can be asked to provide include; general engineering consultancy, safety engineering, RAMS engineering, asset management and independent assurance and notified body.  The role will also include managing projects as well and being a team member.
To provide technical advice on the compliance with design, standards and safety requirements of track systems.
To produce safety engineering, ISA and associated deliverables within the agreed broad parameters in an appropriate format, to an appropriately high standard of accuracy, and take responsibility to review other employee’s work as requested.
Undertake administration as required in line with current management processes and local procedures.
Produce tenders, developing appropriate solutions to satisfy client needs and addressing costing, pricing and commercial issues under the guidance of a Project Director.
To make recommendations based on internal/external client feedback to assist in service delivery improvement and to help build the business.
To contribute to internal/external client management as appropriate to support business growth.
Conduct activities in line with internal management procedures and local instructions, accreditation schemes, legislation and industry standards.
To pursue Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
To mentor/coach/support other technical employees to achieve effective technical knowledge transfer and application.
To undertake project management where applicable including; client management, project team management, monitoring project progress and spend against budget and contract requirements and performance against the contract including delivering the required margin. Job Responsibilities:

Perform and lead independent safety assessment projects including NoBo projects, especially those which involve significant track systems and wheel/rail interface issues.
Provide consultancy to clients on all track and wheel/rail issues.
Manage a suite of assessment and verification projects, including technical and financial management.  
Development of proposals, in own area of expertise, and also to support the wider strategy for the business, including the build up of project budgets. Job Requirements:

We are looking for candidates with a degree in a relevant engineering or scientific discipline, with a proven in depth track record of relevant experience in permanent way including track design, track components (including rails, sleepers, switches and crossings, points etc.)
A knowledge of analysis tools such as Vampire and the interpretation of results from such tools.
Experience in maintenance requirements and the effects of the wheel/rail interface condition including rolling contact fatigue, gouge corner cracking and other rail wear issues.
Ideally, candidates have achieved or are working towards Chartered status with an appropriate Engineering or Scientific Institute such as the IET or IMechE and/or have the relevant experience in a similar role within the railway.
There may also be a requirement to travel overseas, sometimes at short notice and support of incident investigations may also be require.
Candidates will also need good communication skills, including presentation skills, technical report writing; the ability to manage their own workload and work to tight deadlines if required.
